Gallup has released its annual State of the Global Workplace report, and the numbers demand attention. Global employee engagement has dropped to 20%—its lowest point since 2020—and the cost is staggering: approximately $10 trillion in lost productivity worldwide. That’s not a rounding error. That’s 9% of global GDP.

Engagement is falling—and managers are bearing the brunt
The 2026 report reveals that global engagement has now declined for two consecutive years, dropping from a peak of 23% in 2022 to 20% today. Every single percentage point represents roughly 21 million workers. That’s the scale we’re talking about.
What’s particularly striking is where the decline is concentrated: managers. Since 2022, manager engagement has dropped nine points—from 31% to 22%. The people responsible for leading teams, driving culture, and enabling performance are themselves disengaged. And the data shows this is dragging down the entire workforce.

Gallup’s data shows that the strongest predictor of meaningful AI adoption—besides technical integration—is whether a direct manager actively champions it. Employees whose managers support AI use are 8.7 times more likely to say AI has transformed their organization. The unlock isn’t better software. It’s better-supported people.

We’re dealing with a new emotional baseline, and traditional approaches aren’t keeping pace.
